11th SPEEDY LEWIS MEMORIAL RALLY

RALLY CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND SIX
August 12, 1967

The first decade of the Speedy Lewis Memorial Rally was filled with memories of lost cars, impassable roads ?, errant signs and irate police.

But with age comes wisdom, and so all previous tradition of the SLR was broken as 24 of 26 entries actually found all the check points, which were indeed on paved roads.

Bob Vahlberg finally retired the grand old trophy with his third victory (and his third navigator).

Mark Cain and Don Gwynne kept a spark of the old tradition alive by missing the turn which was only ? marked by five, yes only five signs reading in part;   “B S Groc.!”

After the event the evening (and some of Sunday morning) was spent in Kiwanis Park swapping lies and stories which ralIyists are famous for. If an award was to be given for the best story it surely would have gone to Don Brown, who made the rally but got hopelessly lost trying to find the park!

Oh well Don, there’s always SLR 1968.
